Lake Viva Naughton – Slide Gate
Project Details
Prime Contractor: Advanced American Construction
Owner: Rocky Mountain Power (PacifiCorp)
Location: Kemmerer, WY | May 2018 – June 2019
Advanced American Construction was contacted by Rocky Mountain Power (PacifiCorp) to assist with a slide gate that was stuck in the closed position. The dam operators were anticipating a rise in water elevation in the dam forebay and wanted to avoid utilizing the overflow spillway.
In May of 2018, AAC mobilized a dive crew to Kemmerer, Wyoming, to diagnose the slide gate issue and find a way to temporarily get the gate open. Once onsite, the crew battled challenging weather conditions, high altitude and limited access to get the gate in the open position.
With the gate temporarily placed in the open position, PacifiCorp commissioned AAC under a Design-Build contracting method to repair the slide gate and its mechanical operator. AAC engaged an engineering firm and worked closely with Rocky Mountain Power to replace the aging stem-rod style gate operating assembly with a new hydraulically actuated cylinder, fabricated protection plates, hydraulic power unit, and electronic position indicators.
Project Highlights
- High altitude diving (7,000+ feet)
- Nitrox diving
- Underwater cutting and welding
- Underwater structural bolting
- New underwater hydraulic cylinder, HPU, and hydraulic controls
