AAC: Wins AGC award for Best Utility Infrastructure Renovation Project

April 1, 2014

SANDY’S BULL RUN DAM IMPROVEMENT PROJECT NAMED ONE OF 2013’S BEST CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS
Advanced American Construction, Inc. Wins Associated General Contractors of America’s Alliant Build America Award for Best Utility Infrastructure Renovation Project

LAS VEGAS – Sandy’s Bull Run Dam improvement project was one of the most significant construction projects of 2013, the Associated General Contractors of America announced today.  As a result, the project’s contractor, Portland-based Advanced American Construction, Inc., was one of 19 firms to receive the association’s Alliant Build America Award.

“Projects like these reflect the qualities – elite skill, diligence and resolve – that have made the construction industry successful,” said Paul Diederich, the association’s president and president of Grand Forks, N.D.-based Industrial Builders Inc. “These contractors are setting the standard of excellence in our industry.”

The project consisted of $31 million in infrastructure improvements to a major section of the federally protected Bull Run Watershed, the nation’s purest drinking water reservoir serving nearly 900,000 residents of Portland, Oregon. A new selective withdrawal structure was installed on the existing tower at Dam 2, which allows tower operators to selectively withdraw water from different elevations within the reservoir. This process allows for more natural tail water temperatures to increase the survival rate of the salmon species that spawn Bull Run. This project was a challenge both technically and environmentally, involving major heavy civil, marine, dredge and dive work, while ensuring uninterrupted drinking water services to the city. Work at Bull Run was completed on time, without any major accidents or disputes, and without a single disruption to the drinking water of Portland.

The Alliant Build America Awards highlight the nation’s most significant construction projects.  A panel of judges, representing all areas of construction, evaluated an impressive number of submissions this year, assessing each project’s complexity, use of innovative construction techniques and client satisfaction, among other criteria.  The awards, which were announced during the association’s annual convention in Las Vegas, are considered by many to be the most prestigious recognition of construction accomplishments in the U.S.
